Effects of gabapentin on haemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation

Abstract

Aim: Laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation is followed by a pressor response and cathecolamine release. A large number of techniques have been developed to blunt this response. Our study aims to prove that a single preoperative dose of gabapentin may blunt this hemodynamic response.

Methods:
In a prospective, randomised, double-blind study 178 ASA I, II and III patients were submitted to colorectal surgery and hip artroplasty. They were divided into two groups: one group (n = 88 patients) received preoperatively 800 mg gabapentin p.o., and the other group (n = 90 patients) received placebo. Both groups were operated in general anaesthesia with sevoflurane and orotracheal intubation. We measured: systolic and diastolic arterial pressure and heart rate before induction of anaesthesia and 1, 3, 5, 10 min after tracheal intubation, and also the mean of these values measured at 5 min for the first 30 min after tracheal intubation.

Results:
There was no significant difference of the haemodynamic data between the two groups before induction of anaesthesia. After tracheal intubation the pressor response was significantly reduced in the Gabapentin group, in the first 1, 3, 5 min, in comparison with the Placebo group. Also, in the Placebo group, the values measured 1 and 3 min after orotracheal in-tubation were significantly increased as compared to the baseline values (p < 0.05).

Conclusions:
The preoperative administration of 800 mg gabapentin, in colorectal and orthopedic sur-gery, blunts the hemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.
