Abstract

The development of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema is a characteristic feature of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The most important role in this process is played by some mediators like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with isoforms and their receptors. In this review we explore a growing body of literature looking at the expression and function of VEGF and related molecules in different models of ARDS and at the novel evidences of a potential role of these mediators in promoting repair of the alveolar-capillary membrane during recovery from ARDS.
