Abstract
Bispectral index (BIS) is a device used to monitor hypnosis for reducing the incidence of intraoperative awareness during anaesthesia. BIS provides the clinician with information that can be used to titrate the hypnotic drug doses to individual patient requirements. Limitations of the method and other BIS applications, including use in pediatrics, intensive care and conscious sedations are also discussed in this review.
