Abstract

Different approaches for interpreting acid-base disorders are presented: the traditional Henderson-Hasselbach approaches and the Stewart model, which offers some advantages for the pathophysiological understanding and the clinical interpretation of acid-base imbalances. Despite its apparent complexity, the Stewart concept permits a better understanding of the mechanism of acid-base disorders and represents an alternative for extensive use in clinical practice.
Keywords: acid-base disorders, Stewart’s approach, hyperchloremic acidosis, predominant SIG metabolic acidosis, lactic acidosis, strong ion difference, anion gap, balanced crystalloids solutions.
