Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare two disposable extraglottic airway devices (the laryngeal mask –LMA and the perilaryngeal airway – Cobra-PLA) in spontaneously breathing anesthetized adults.
Material and methods. Forty patients were randomly allocated for airway management with one of the two devices. Intraoperative data were collected about heart rate, mean arterial pressure, pulsoximtery, end tidal CO2, postoperative sore throat and blood staining on devices. We measured also the insertion time and number of attempts to obtain an adequate airway.
Results. There were no differences in haemodynamic and respiratory variables. Time of insertion was shorter for LMA (37.6 ± 18 sec vs. 47.6 ± 16 sec) but the number of attempts was less for Cobra-PLA Blood staining and was detected more frequently (55% vs. 20%) with the Cobra-PLA. The number of patients who suffered from a sore throat in the PLA group was significantly higher than in the LMA group immediately after removal (45% vs. 25%).
Conclusion. Both devices are easy to insert and appear to be effective in establishing an adequate airway.
