Abstract

In this prospective study on 24 patients we assessed the effect of mixing lidocaine with propofol on the dose of propofol required for the induction of hypnosis. Patients were divided in two equal groups: patients in group A received 0.2 mg/kg i.v. lidocaine 1% followed by an infusion of propofol 50 mg/min, whereas those in group B received a prepared mixture of propofol 1% with lidocaine 1% in 10:1 volume ratio infused at the same rate of 50 mg propofol/min.The infusion was stopped when the subjects lost consciousness. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups concerning the mean doses of propofol required for the loss of consciousness. Mixture of 1% propofol with 1% lidocaine in 10:1 volume ratio did not affect the dose of propofol required for the induction of hypnosis.
