Abstract

Aim. To establish the advantage of flumazenil (anexate), used as the antagonist of benzodiazepine in general anesthesia for short time ENT surgical procedures.

Material and method.
2287 patients (1579 adults and 708 children), ASA I and II, undergoing short time ENT surgical procedures, under general anesthesia with benzodiazepine, were given flumazenil as the antagonist. The results were compared with a control group.

Results.
All the clinical parameters were significantly improved in comparison with the control group. The central sedative effect of benzodiazepine was antagonized at an average dose of 0.3-0.4 mg flumazenil in adults and 0.1-0.2 mg flumazenil in children. Full awakening from general anesthesia occurred in 7.8±1.1 minutes after flumazenil versus 25.2±3 minutes in controls. No side effects due to flumazenil were registered.
