Extracorporeal circulation in a patient with severe coagulopathy

Abstract

Cardiac surgery is often associated with profuse hemorrhage. Excessive bleeding may require reoperation in 3-4% of patients when conventional methods fail to arrest the bleeding.
We present the case of a young male with severe sepsis and hepatic failure that required emergency heart surgery using extracorporeal circulation. The management of the severe coagulopathy was made with conventional methods and recombinant Factor VIIa.
