Abstract
Investigations into sources of patients’ satisfaction and discomfort in the intensive care unit is still an actual problem and should be performed periodically. The aim of our study was to evaluate patients’ satisfaction and to detect possible sources of discomfort. An original questionnaire was designed, taking into consideration the problems and the specificities of our surgical intensive care unit.
Patients and methods. 100 patients admitted to ICU (between January 2004-May 2004) were included in the study after obtaining informed consent. Questionnaires were completed during the first 24h after their discharge from ICU.
Results. The first three main sources of discomfort were pain (61%), insomnia (45%) and anxiety (44%). Immobilization, noise, venous punctures, hunger and thirst were other important sources of stress and discomfort.
On the other hand, 82% of the patients stated that the quality of staff care was very impressive. All patients who had requested assistance had received it promptly.
Key words: discomfort, satisfaction, intensive care, questionnaire
