Abstract

Since 1981 several severity scores have been used to estimate the probability of hospital mortality of adult intensive care unit patients. The APACHE III scoring system was developed using data collected in 42 US hospitals.
This study presents the mortality prediction for patients with a stroke using APACHE III SCORE. Information collected for each patient with cerebral haemorrhage included age, co morbid conditions, location before ICU admission, whether surgery was elective or an emergency, and the Acute Physiology Score which reflects weights for 17 potential physiologic abnormalities. The APACHE III score determined an objective death risk estimation. This score was very efficient in detecting the patients with low risk of mortality. When the patient’s risk was high, the positive predictive values remained poor, with 7 false positive results.
