Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of this randomized, double blinded study was to compare the incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after dexametazone versus droperidol following laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Methods.
40 patients who underwent a general anaesthesia received prior to induction either 4 mg Dexametazone (group 1) or 1.25 mg Droperidol (group 2). Postoperatively, nausea, vomiting, the degree of pain and the analgesic requirements were assessed for 24 hours.

Results.
PONV occurred in 14 patients (70%) in group 2 and in 3 patients (15%) in group 1 (p = 0.024). There was no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of fluids. Preliminary results showed lower needs for analgesia in the dexamethazone group.

Conclusion.
We conclude that, compared with droperidol, dexamethaxzone may have a better effect for prevention of PONV in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
